Self-Governing Classroom Simulation

An American History simulation where students discover, build,
maintain, and experiment with self-governance.

About the Simulation

A Parallel to American History

Traditional social studies simulations model legislative bodies, courts, or elections, replicating the current U.S. system without exploring its origins or purpose. Self-Government Works takes a different approach, guiding students through the process of discovering, building, and sustaining their own systems of self-governance. Rather than reenacting history, it parallels the American experience, allowing students to confront oppression, break free, create a government, and maintain it. As they study American history, students actively engage in real classroom self-governance, gaining a deeper understanding of why the U.S. system exists and how it functions.

American History Class

Self-Government Works is a dynamic supplement for American History classes, seamlessly enhancing your curriculum with student-driven self-governance simulations. Its first three phases include 15 adaptable lessons that parallel U.S. history, fostering critical thinking. Interim activities between phases maintain engagement through discussions and creative tasks. Spanning 10-13 weeks, this customizable program transforms classrooms into vibrant labs of democracy, deepening students’ understanding of governance while complementing your existing lessons.

U.S. Government Class

Self-Government Works adapts seamlessly for U.S. Government classes by running each phase consecutively, delivering foundational instruction that deepens student understanding and sparks enthusiasm for governance. By exploring the origins and purposes of the U.S. system, students engage actively, connecting historical foundations to modern government. This customizable simulation heightens interest and fosters critical thinking, transforming classrooms into dynamic spaces where students discover the principles shaping the United States.
